What to have ready

The call goes faster with a few things to hand: what the system is doing or not doing and when it started, whether you heat with gas, oil, propane or electricity, whether heat arrives through vents or radiators, roughly how old the equipment is, and your ZIP code.

If there is a make and model on the unit, that helps more than anything else — usually on a data plate on the side or inside the access panel. Worth a look before you dial, along with any error code showing on the thermostat or the unit itself.

If it is urgent

A carbon monoxide alarm sounding, a smell of gas, or soot around the furnace means leaving the building and calling 911 or your gas utility from outside, before you call anyone else. New Jersey Natural Gas, PSE&G, South Jersey Gas and Elizabethtown Gas all run 24-hour emergency lines for suspected leaks, and they do not charge to come out and make it safe.

No heat in freezing weather is urgent for a different reason: pipes. In the meantime, open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls, run a thin trickle from the furthest faucet, and close off rooms you are not using. No cooling during a heat wave is urgent where anyone in the house is elderly, an infant, or has a cardiac or respiratory condition.
