The wall-mounted head is the common form but not the only one. Ceiling cassettes recess into a dropped ceiling, and floor-standing units sit where a radiator would — which suits period rooms where a high wall unit would look wrong.

The physical work

A pad or bracket for the outdoor unit, a three-inch core hole per head, the line set and condensate drain run between them, and an electrical circuit. A single-zone install is often a day. Multi-zone runs longer, mostly because each head needs its own line set routed and concealed.

Where the line sets run matters aesthetically

Externally they are usually enclosed in a covering channel. On a period façade, or anywhere visible from the street, agree the route before work starts — this is the commonest source of disappointment on an otherwise good installation.

Condo, co-op and historic district approval

In a multi-family building the outdoor unit almost always needs board approval, and in a historic district what may be attached to an exterior wall can be restricted. Establish this before equipment is ordered, not after.
