Indoor Air Quality in Ridgewood

Two things shape HVAC work in Ridgewood: the age of the building stock, and a climate that swings far enough to make both halves of the system work hard. Equipment is rarely the constraint here — fitting it to a house that was not designed for it is.

A well-sealed newer house, or an older one after serious air-sealing work, can hold onto cooking moisture, VOCs and CO2 to the point where the air feels stale. That is a ventilation problem and no filter solves it.

ERV and HRV

Energy and heat recovery ventilators bring fresh air in and stale air out while transferring most of the heat — and in an ERV, some of the moisture — between the two streams. You get the air change without throwing away what you paid to condition.

Radon is a separate matter

Worth knowing in this state: parts of northern and western New Jersey sit on geology with elevated radon potential, and radon mitigation is its own trade rather than an HVAC add-on. Testing is inexpensive. If you are already thinking about indoor air, test for it.

Filtration: grade and fit, not brand

Filters are rated by MERV, which measures what proportion of particles of a given size they capture. Higher captures more — and higher also resists airflow more, which is where people get into trouble.

The trap with high-MERV filters

Fitting a dense MERV 13 filter to a system designed for a cheap MERV 8 restricts airflow. The furnace overheats and trips its limit switch; the AC coil freezes. People then conclude the system is failing when they have simply choked it. If you want higher filtration, the answer is more filter area — a four- or five-inch media cabinet — not a denser one-inch panel.

Fit matters as much as grade

Air takes the easy path. A high-grade filter with a half-inch gap around the frame filters very little, because the air goes round it. A properly sealed MERV 8 outperforms a loose MERV 13.

Wildfire smoke

Smoke is fine particulate, which is exactly what filtration is good at — and after June 2023 this stopped being theoretical in New Jersey. MERV 13 captures a meaningful share of that size range. Where the system cannot take it, a well-sized portable air cleaner in the room you actually occupy does more than an underperforming central filter.
