What geothermal does differently

Instead of exchanging heat with outdoor air, it exchanges it with the ground through buried loops — horizontal trenches across a yard, or vertical bores. Ground temperature is far more stable than air temperature, so performance does not fall away on the coldest nights the way an air-source unit does. There is also no outdoor unit, which matters at the shore where salt destroys them.

The loop field. Installation is substantially more expensive and more disruptive than air-source, because it means either significant excavation or drilling, and it needs the land to do it. On a small lot in Hudson or Essex it is frequently not feasible at all; on an acre in Hunterdon or Sussex it is straightforward.

New build or major renovation where the ground is being disturbed anyway. Large properties in the colder northwest, where air-source performance falls off most.
