Where it works

Where it does not

Retrofitting ducts into a finished period house is expensive and destructive, and ductless is usually the better answer rather than a compromise.

The high-velocity option

Small-diameter high-velocity systems can be threaded through existing wall cavities where conventional ducts will not fit. They cost more and they are noisier, but in a house where preserving plaster and trim matters, they are a genuine third option worth asking about.
